I wonder if Santa got the memo that gone are the days when he can  pop up under the chimney and surprise us with Christmas goodies from la-la land! Times are definitely getting tougher and this should correlate to being more practical in spending your hard earned money!

Relax kids...we are not cutting the budget - -we are just spending it more wisely!

In as much as we want to surprise the teens with those mystery gifts --as each year passed by, the thrill of opening 20 boxes is not as enticing to their sophisticated lifestyles (duh - the joy of drama teens). So rather than being stuck with unwanted stocking stuffers and random items, it's always best to encourage each family member to come up with a wish list! Tonight , we are making one to ensure that we beat the 9am Saturday deadline Santa imposed  earlier (with his iron fist)!

HOW TO SAVE MONEY: ELEGANT DINNER FOR LESS

You can enjoy an elegant dinner party with your family without breaking the bank! Happy Thanksgiving to all and I want to share how I achieve an elegant dinner party for 5 with  a working budget of $40!

Plan menu in advance: I have a picky family who has a strong opinion on food.  Hubby hates turkey, G1 loves sushi, G2 wants to go vegetarian, G3 demands for steak and I hate leftovers! The risk of overspending may be prevented if you allocate a few days in advance to involve the family in your decision making process. Here's some suggested tips to help you plan 3-4 weeks before the actual date:

• List down all the food requests and place them in categories - Appetizers, Main Dish, Dessert and Side Dishes
• Go through a process of elimination where you will limit 2 -3 dishes under each category
• Regularly check your local deli or  newspaper ads and determine items on sale
• Make a decision on desserts that you will create versus store bought - - in most cases, homemade desserts can save you more than $10

For our thanksgiving dinner, we have decided to go with simple dishes we all enjoy

Main Dish:

Baked WILD SALMON WITH GARLIC SAUCE AND CAPERS (similar preparation)

Set a budget that you can afford: 

 If you have been following this blog, you will know by now that we  encourage  frugal living  except when it comes to food. We literally spend more than $50/week on fresh fruits alone as we encourage our teens to snack on fresh produce rather than chips and junk food.

I had the tendency to splurge on extravagant  dishes (plus spending money on centerpieces) for our dinner parties in the past. Yes, I love having more than 4 desserts, 3 choices of antipasto, setting up my buffet table to hold my fish/chicken/beef/pasta entree (I have 3  choices of pasta delivered) --that I spend more than $200  -- Yikes - -No More !

The trick: List only the essentials  and plan to spend $10-$15 per head 

Avoid using paper products: I understand that convenience is important specially if you are like us with a weird pet peeve that one food cannot touch another food (It's pathetic  --sorry). I love changing plates and in the past I used those cute themed paper products from Target so I won't have to clean up. The problem: I enjoy the themed party effect  that I spend more than $10 for tissues and cups alone - -That's it!  Yes it's convenient as you can just toss them in the trash bag but so expensive that I now let the dish washer help me in this quest.

Recreate your settings: I love going to restaurants with the "ambiance" (sometimes more than the food) so every opportunity for me to lay out a good setting is most welcome. If you plan to purchase a centerpiece but the cost associated to fresh flowers or new decoration may be a challenge - -Try using wine glasses with a floating candle inside or  use those  simple candlestick, table runner or any random accent that you can find. Tonight, I am keeping it really simple by having my two reliable ants do the magic (Yes ! I didn't spend anything on centerpiece)

HOW TO SAVE MONEY: FIND GEMS IN THE RUBBLE

I was thinking of having a garage sale to convert some of our old gadgets to cash  - -Seems like a great idea in my head, but reality tells me that  the time spent on waiting for some random buyer to drive in our front lawn is not appealing.

Last weekend, we unloaded 3 large boxes  for donation and since we gave out items that are slightly used (game boards, clothes that were worn once or twice, kitchen gadgets that were recently upgraded etc), one  teen suggested that there is a high potential that she can find a gem out of the pile at Goodwill . Hmmm..we are donating and unloading some of our stuff -- now you want more? Fine..let's just browse....

...True enough, she found a couple of classic books at $1.99 each (Retails $12 ) and I got a John Maxwell book (Retails $24) that I was browsing through the other day at Barnes and Nobles.

After an hour of going through the aisle of random items we don't really need, we left the place with two bags loaded with books and it only cost me $20 (I'm sure it's more than $200 at retail). So happy that we took the time out to check this out as the $20 is surely worth  3 months of reading materials for my voracious readers.

HOW TO SAVE MONEY: HOW TO MINIMIZE PET CARE COST

We have a SPOILED  CAT who: 

• prefers canned food versus dry food
• prefers to take a bath every weekend
• celebrates his birthday

If you add the hours spent on his grooming, giving him a bath, vacuuming the kitchen, cleaning the litter - -3 hours every weekend is spent (not to mention time  keeping him company at 3am everyday)

So much time spent for a small guy! The good thing: B4 is a cat...how much more if he is a dog..a big dog..a show dog (who requires a trainer, dog walker, dog sitter etc etc) Yikes.don't want to imagine!

Which makes me think , how much budget do we need to allocate for total spend per year associated to pet care. And where do we cut cost?

Here's something for you to consider on how to save money:

 LEARN HOW TO GROOM YOUR PETS AT HOME: Average cost of grooming ranges from $30 - $60 per visit. To help us save money, we purchased his own grooming kit (approx: $90). Initially, it was a stressful activity for both B4 and Dr D hubby (both were afraid!), but after 2 sessions, we developed a system and B4 became more relaxed.

ENSURE VACCINES ARE UPDATED: Yearly vaccines/visits to the vet (approx. $70 -90) are essential to ensure long term care for your pet.  Keep your files in one folder and set up veterinary appointments in advance. Also do check at local pet store in your area for seasonal vaccination specials.

FEED PET WITH QUALITY FOOD (and in moderation): We have  a finicky cat who hates dry food. One day, I tried to substitute his canned food  and I regretted this move. For one, his tummy did not like it and secondly, I wasted $15. It took a while before we figured out the brand he prefer but it is worth the cost to spend a little more on quality food with flavors he like . Read the label carefully and follow feeding guide (usually twice a day)

KEEP ESSENTIALS HANDY: Keep a drawer/ storage bin for your pet's gadgets and ensure that the products are replenished on a regular basis 

CONSIDER SPAY/NEUTER: I definitely cannot go to the same path similar to the 101 Dalmatians ...and besides..studies shows that a spayed/neutered pet has more beneficial effects.

PLAN FOR EMERGENCY COST: Pets are like our kids, so if you don't have a pet insurance at this time, plan to start saving for incidental expenses related to medical cost (ranges $300 - $600)

Having a pet is not easy! Just like our kids,they need our time, love, attention and deserve the best of care.For me the best way to save is to KNOW your budget and ensure that you FOLLOW  your budget plan. We have a small cat and his yearly budget is $900++/ year. Again..don't want to imagine the cost if he is a dog! - -All good!

HOW TO SAVE MONEY: BOTTLE IT UP

A few months ago, I shared my  COFFEE MADNESS (See:  IS COFFEE GOOD FOR ME?) . What I did was to count the number of cups of coffee I consume in an average work day -- and Starbucks will surely love me as I am the open target for their ads - -the busy bee who carries the Starbucks coffee in her meetings. Long story short, to help me minimize and control my caffeine intake I took the easy way out and just brought by own coffee mug (holds 2 cups) - -Problem solved!

Nine months later, here I am still filling my coffee mug at 7:30 am everyday, totally saved $4 -$8/week as I have not visited Starbucks drive-thru since that post (I only buy grande mocha when I am at the airport) - -And guess what , my coffee mug saved me a minimum of $300 in 9 months - -All because I chose to brew my own coffee daily- -Yeah!

So in celebration of my big success, I found an opportunity to expand my saving madness--so I bought this water bottle ($5.99 at Ross) so I can save the money I spent on cold drinks at the  giant vending machine in the break room (approx: $1/day)

Yeah right...I'm the crazy saving girl who bought these mugs and thinks its a great idea?  Well -- for some it doesn't matter - - but as I have reiterated in the past - -Every dollar I save is a dollar closer to my early retirement goal to live a princess life somewhere near the beach...

So excited but ..Houston, we have a problem - -They make my bag really heavy now! I'll survive!

HOW TO SAVE MONEY: TEACH KIDS THE VALUE OF HARD WORK

We provide our teens with monthly "salary" and not "allowance". This is one way that they can measure the value of performing their chores on a regular basis - - No chores - No pay!  Truly fascinating how a change in mindset can change the behavior of our teens. Through this concept - -they embrace the art of  prioritizing their needs (and budgeting too!)

We plan for at least 2-4 grand shopping spree per year for them BUT everything else they want in between the shopping schedule needs to come from their own pocket. So far this tactic works for us as they have a hard time letting go of their money at the mall. Yesterday,  girls had  fun without spending more than $11!!!

That's amazing as I know that teens can burn more than $100 at the mall in an hour....

HOW TO SAVE MONEY: GIVE IN "KIND" NOT IN "CASH"

When money is tough and you have a limited budget to work on -- don't be discouraged when there are days that you have to extend your dollar but think of it as an opportunity for you to be more creative!

Gift giving season is just around the corner and if you have a tight budget, consider the "Giving in Kind" concept  where you can provide a generous gift without breaking your wallet. Here are some ideas:

GIVE THE GIFT OF SERVICE: Our teens don't get a monthly allowance - -but instead they get paid a fixed amount of salary every month for doing their chores. Just like a salaried employee, we pay them extra money for any additional services rendered (i.e $5/car on car wash, $10 to clean my room, $30 for mowing the lawn). It was their dad's birthday and one teen daughter does not have the cash at that time to buy his dad the CD he wanted. The CD is worth $15 dollars but she  gave her dad two gift certificates worth $35 for his birthday last year through service  - - One is a gift certificate for a Free Car Wash and one Gift Certificate for Mowing the Lawn  - -Brilliant! GIVE THE GIFT OF ART: Do you have the Picasso talent running through your bloodstream? If so, why not share your hidden talent to brighten up someone's wall! Get your old paintbrushes and create something that  will surely make your mama proud. When we were in Colorado, the teens draw those anime characters in a poster format to give out to their friends during holidays - -it doesn't cost anything...just charcoal pencil and leftover poster boards! If you are doing this...make sure you sign your name and place a date at the bottom -- who knows one day you'll be famous and that $2 art will be worth $2 million dollars (Picture below is one created by the eldest teen dated 10.2009  - -so when will you be famous?)

GIVE THE GIFT OF FLAVOR: If you can command your pots and pans to do magic for you, why not create something edible that will make one's tummy happy?

Today's is my daughter's friend's birthday and the girls decided to surprise her with a homemade cake delivered to her door. It's a simple white cake with our own version of cream cheese icing - -The CAKE is worth less than $6 but the smile on her face - - PRICELESS!

GIVE THE GIFT OF ATTENTION: You don't need to wait for the big occasion to let one know they are important to your life - -Go ahead and give them a call  - -tell them they are cherished and no matter where you are wherever you will be - - they'll always have a friend/sister to lean on! This is what I love most about my sister - -She doesn't send me a card on my birthday - not even a gift on Christmas - -BUT who needs that when I know that she has my back at the time that I need her most - -and she'll fight for me no matter what!! I love you my only sister!!! Please call me -- u don't call me enough!

SIMPLE WHITE CAKE RECIPE:

INGREDIENTS:

1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 3/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup milk

CREAM CHEESE ICING: Mix 8 oz cream cheese with 2 tbsp butter, 2 tbsp sugar and 1/4 cup whipping cream

HERE'S HOW:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
In a medium bowl, cream together the sugar and butter.
Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
Combine flour and baking powder, add to the creamed mixture and mix well.
Add in the milk until batter is smooth.
Place batter into the prepared pan.
Bake for 30 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven

Let cake cool and cover with cream cheese icing

HOW TO SAVE MONEY: USE CALENDARS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE

 I pay half of everything, so to make it easier for budget tracking, my husband and I have allocated a fixed amount every month that needs to go to our joint checking account to cover for all household expenditures ( bills, utilities, mortgage etc etc).  Like most people, I get paid every two weeks and after all those deductions (401k, stock purchase, health insurance, pension, tax)  - -oh my - I have nothing left!

WHAT WORKS FOR ME: To ensure that I pay my share of the household expense on time and at the same time have a small cash reserve for emergency fund, I set up a process where I am 2 weeks in advance to all bill deadlines.

WHAT'S MY ISSUE: Well, not simple for me as after all investment and those 401k crap, I have literally nothing left . Probably a year ago, I was one of those who feels like I was living from paycheck after paycheck (is that how you call it?) as I have to wait for the next paycheck to get caught up with the bills from the previous month. I am not in debt at all- -but  I simply don't plan ahead and use TIME to my advantage. I know the paycheck is coming but the day it arrives DOES NOT usually coincide with the deadline the mortgage is due!

WHERE'S MY OPPORTUNITY: We get paid twice a month right? BUT if you noticed, we all get an opportunity to have at least  one chance of getting 3 paychecks in a month / year. I used to think that the extra "third" paycheck is my "fun money" (duh it's a bonus , I can do whatever I want - it's mine!). Life was simple - I got the extra check, go to Dillard's, buy a bag and life was good until three months down the road ..the bill deadline messed me up again and I swear the calendar creator and my HR department needs to have a discussion.

HOW I GET THERE:  Finally, I sat down and simply utilized excel to plot the salary date against the mortgage date. I asked HR to provide me a copy of my salary dates and mapped out my  entire year. Finally,  I am able to find a window of opportunity  and identified the timing of that "third check". Not a genius to figure it out - - but if  I can  allocate that extra paycheck to offset one date in my expense tracker, my issue on chasing deadlines will be eliminated. Hence, my problem solved by simply using my calendars appropriately!

After all my blurbs - - the simple version?  If you are getting an extra paycheck this coming  October or November. DO NOT SPEND IT - -Use it as a buffer for your bills. This will give you two weeks ahead of the expense game. It may be tempting as you can see big $$$ just sitting in your checking account - - Don't even attempt to look at it ...consider it as "peace of mind money". I am able to do it - -so can you!

I am not caught up with my bills but definitely that third paycheck will go to my savings. Oh well, speaking of third paycheck - - I really need new shoes..it's been awhile since I have something new in my closet!

HOW TO SAVE MONEY: FIND INSPIRATION

 Each day I am realizing that as time progress, everything seems to be more challenging.

When my daughters were younger, I only have to worry about small petty things like what toys to get them, what clothes they should wear etc etc...Life was easy ! Nowadays, I feel burned out! To top it all, I feel I am alone! I can't talk to my family about my problems cause I don't want them to worry, I can't even open up to my daughters as I don't want them to be distracted at school - - I have no one here in the US that I can talk to -- agghhhhhh!

Today, I read a noble act from one web buddy about her work  (Runako Designs by Dee) and it gave me a sense of self realization that  I shouldn't be focused on my issues and instead channel my energy to some worthwhile endeavors.Obviously I cannot create any charity project for now as I am still in the place where "charity in my definition begins at home" but Dee's work touched my heart in a special way.

Today, I updated my finance tracker and although I have no debt - - I am happy to see that I am only 8 checks to go ($400/ check) before I completed the $12,000 money I owe my husband for money he spent on our US visa.

Still....Literally -- no money in my wallet (well, I have $20 yesterday and I paid $10 cash for pizza) but stocks and 401k are doing great  --which is important to me. I hope it will still continue to grow as I am relying on my long term investment to carry me through when I am old and gray...

HOW TO SAVE MONEY: FIND A WAY TO MOTIVATE YOU

 If there's one thing special about my family - -it's our sense of pride. Not everybody has it, understands it or  even treasures it. Lately, I feel the sense of inner satisfaction that I am able to help my family back home. I feel happy that by not splurging here in the US, I am able to share some blessings to them (even in a small way). 

Life is hard nowadays and if we are struggling here in the US -- I can just imagine how managing finances is harder on the other side of the world.  My family doesn't ask for help, but I know them too well that  it's when they DON'T ask that's when they DO need help the most. I guess I'm the same.... I will never ask for help specially from  people I know will count all the small favors and pennies spent on me in my face.....and sadly, I know a couple of people who are just like that.

When I  spoke to my brother last time, he mentioned that he'll pay me back and although it made me smile that he has intentions to do so, it  breaks my heart to hear his words as I know he  has swallowed his pride by accepting my help. And for him -- his sense of pride is important so  if you are reading this "hey, do you think I am doing things for you or mom? It's my  gift for my lovely nieces".  As for me, I wish I have more ...so I can give more.

For now, I still have no cash in my wallet but I feel so rich that I am able to share the little blessing I have. I will have bigger problems for sure when my daughters enter college but I am fortunate that I am in a position today to help even in a small way and this is the reason why I want to save more...

I know I am not going to be a millionaire by being frugal but knowing that the small amount I am able to share means the world to them is a big motivation for me.

HOW TO SAVE MONEY: FIND WAYS TO DELAY PURCHASES

Just when I thought I have survived the long back to school expense month,  here comes another one.

 I never had a major dental expense  (except for the regular zoom whitening every 2 years) as I try to be religious to my daily brushing-flossing- listerine habit. In fact, I even brush and floss my teeth twice at work (my pet peeve as I am in meetings all day long) so  I was expecting not to see my dentist for another 6 months (especially that my back ached for a week after the last prophylaxis session).

  I was wrong! Apparently I have to go through a preventive minor procedure that requires me to pay $550 out of pocket tomorrow?? What??? Aggghh....  I hope this is an expense I can delay --apparently not. But the dentist suggested  to replace a crown before a major damage may happen -- whatever that is. Oh well, this was originally done more than 10 years ago back when I was still in Manila -- hmmm..10 years?  Ah - Ok, I'll stop whining.

The thing is: I try to delay unnecessary expenses if at all possible.  Like today, I just made an executive decision and tossed one baking pan, four cookie sheets and one skillet in the garbage.  How much is a 9" baking pan? Less than $15, right? You would think that  with all the baking and DINING WITH BATALI cooking in this house, I would have 10 of those? Wrong -- I only have one 9 inch pan which I have been using for 5 years now ...and today, I finally replaced it (costs $ 7.49 at Ross - --super cheap). Why did it took me  5 years to replace something that I know I can afford?  One daughter teen calls it   "cheap-0" , the other one calls it "wise" and the other one doesn't care. Whatever!  I still have to get one skillet and I can't find anything I like that is less than $40 today (the calphalon I like costs $50)...I'll keep on looking..

Think about this: $10 here, $5 there and the next thing you know, you spent $100 -$150 each Saturday on things you don't need and will not use. Been there , done that! This is the primary reason why I don't go to the mall....Anyway, there are items where we can maximize until it falls apart , but health related expense/care is something that should never be delayed or placed as low priority.

Tomorrow is my dental appointment - -I will still whine about the $550 copay in the next 3-4 weeks or so-- but if my original crown lasted more than 10 years..I am sure this new crown should survive  till I am 50.

The joy of being a working mom is my brain is accustomed to endless multitasking, going back and forth on things I need to do related to household  chores and conference calls I need to set up. Never ending small details from what type of sushi I need to bring for my bento box on Tuesday,what new dvd I should check out at movie cube on Wednesday and agenda for a big presentation on Thursday.

As I make my long priority list for next week, I focused on areas that can be converted to potential saving opportunity that I can easily measure. I came up with the following short list:

• Bring my own coffee to work
• Utilize movie cube $1 dvd versus $4 at blockbuster
• Make my own lunch to work
• Limit dining out to 1x/month versus 4x/month
• Ensure no balance on credit card
• Read online news
• Avoid mall shopping on weekends
• Limit theater/movies to once a month vs weekly
• Mow our own lawn
• Iron our own clothes

To make the activities more encouraging, I forecast the amount I can save weekly, monthly and annualized value. When I sum it all up, potential annualized savings may go over $10,000++.

HOW TO SAVE MONEY: PLAN A STAYCATION

We usually spend more than $2,000 for a one week family vacation trip. This summer, we are planning on a "staycation"! A brilliant plan to save money as we need a small expense break  so we can allocate the money for some home projects (window treatments), and for me - setting aside some cash for our big out of the country trip next year.

I got a mailer from our bank and it's like they know that we are saving money and planning to stay in our house this summer. I added my two cents and here's how we plan to cut travel expense through the staycation concept!

DINE OUT IN STYLE:
What I love about vacation is the idea of discovering exotic dining places! If you are staying at home, instead of going out to your favorite food chain, try to visit a local restaurant  that you have always been meaning to try but kept delaying for the right occasion. We usually spend $70- $90 on a regular family-nite dinner at Red Robbins or Bahama Breeze but adding another $50 dollars more for a seat in a nice restaurant may be a good option. Save money and enjoy the experience with an estimate cost of $150

GO TO THE THEATER AND DISCOVER LOCAL TALENTS:

We don't have to go to New York to watch a Broadway musical. We love watching plays and musicals and fortunate for us the we have great talents playing RENT in July here in town.

Check out your local theaters and find great musicals. Usually tickets will range from $20 - $30 per person...better than the $200 seat in New York right?

VISIT THE LOCAL MUSEUM:

We always take our local culture for granted. 

We are members of BROOKS MUSEUM, sadly our busy schedule won't allow us to maximize our membership. I checked online and there are cool exhibits and movies to see - -I need to plan this in July. Estimate Cost: $25

ENJOY YOUR  BACKYARD:

We have a great backyard that offers a lot of privacy. The girls asked me last night if they can plan a summer party with a couple of friends.  They are thinking of a "Phantom of the Opera" party where they will start with watching DVD, followed by endless giggling  and some great hamburgers! Hmmm..might as well bring out my summer dishes with matching non alcoholic margarita and decorate the patio to match their theme.

PLAN AN EARLY BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING:
I am certain that we spent more than $200 for souvenirs alone when we went to New York, California and Washington DC. My girls love shopping and might as well plan the back to school shopping  early in July. However, before that date, I will plan to drop them off at the mall on their own for some crazy shopping at Hot Topic or Wet Seal  with a budget of $20/each.

 TAKE ADVANTAGE OF LOCAL CLUBS:
If you are a member of a local recreation center /club and only go there for the gym facility - - - you need to start checking out if there are  monthly summer programs offered this July.

I never look at their activities and browsing at their link today, I just realize that I am missing a lot on my monthly  fees as they offer a lot of activities to include classes on: spinning, pilates, kick boxing, dancing.

CASH IN YOUR PERKS: If you are a member of a frequent flier, casino player card or any hotel bonus points programs - -consider cashing out some points for some free overnight stay in a hotel with dinner privileges within the state

So when you add my plans  and my cost estimate,  here's how I plan to save $1500 enjoying my summer just by staying at home!

HOW TO SAVE MONEY: CUT ON GROCERY BUDGET

I am involved in a big  six sigma initiative at work and one opportunity we are looking into is evaluating our current process in an effort to maximize efficiency while at the same time minimizing cost. I am impressed with the details associated to each process and it inspires me to look deeply on how I can apply the tactics to my quest for more savings.

THE CHALLENGE: We usually spend $200/week on groceries. No, we don't eat a lot, but despite the  Meal Planning and Grocery List  tactic, there are still gaps once in a while.

THE ISSUE: I can cut on other areas but there is no way I can reduce my current budget for fresh fruits and produce  (approx. $40/week). When I say NO WAY - -don't let me go in that direction as we have teenage girls who easily consume 5 lbs of grapes in one sitting  and/or  a 10 lb bag of orange in 2 days (better than chips - so why not!) so I might as well find another area of opportunity.

For us, it's not about cutting cost - - but making the most out of our budget. Obviously, my needs at work is different, so I really do not need to do a deep dive on another process ...but here's what I would recommend

• Advance planning by utilizing Weekly  Meal Planning form
• Cost containment by adhering to Grocery Checklist
• Sourcing based on availability of Free Coupons
• Allocate one credit card for all groceries/supplies

MY NEW  AREA OF OPPORTUNITY: HOW STORE BRANDS MAY HELP YOU SAVE ADDITIONAL 80% VERSUS LEADING BRAND

Have you considered brand substitution? We embrace the concept of store brands more aggressively nowadays. Initially, I was hesitant to consider a store brand due to my perception that they offer lower quality level! But if you will instill due diligence on carefully reading through the label and  willing to be bold enough to do your own personal pilot study - - this will pave way for more savings!

Listed below are actual cost savings derived from brand substitution. I have coupons on hand but the store brands are more economical even if I use the coupons.

For today, I was able to reduce cost by $24  on items purchased above

To each his own...but with  brand substitution,  I am able to go within the $200 range per  week without sacrificing the steak night, my Japanese sushi lunches (also  Dr. D hubby's asian meals for a brown bag) and endless fruits supply that  we love most  (...plus key lime pie for dessert tonight)!

HOW TO SAVE MONEY: BREAKFAST IN BED TACTIC

I woke up today craving for a sumptuous breakfast  at a nearby diner (consisting of pancakes, bacon, fried eggs, muffins and fresh brewed coffee  - yum!). The girls and I used to go out and enjoy breakfast bonding time to let Dr. D hubby catch up on his sleep on the weekend.  A standard $8.99 per head once or twice a month is not that expensive...but when you sum it all up in a year's time...it  costs a lot.

Cost estimate without tax and tips:

One weekend : $35.96
($ 8.99 x 4 )

One month: $71.92
($35.96 x 2 breakfast sessions)

Six months: $431.52
($71.92 x 6 )

One year: $ 863.04
($71.92 x 12)

$800++ per year??? That's a lot of pancakes --almost the cost of a year's worth of car insurance? Yikes!

WHAT IS A BREAKFAST IN BED TACTIC?

.

Thank the stars for my kitchen gadgets, well stocked pantry,frozen fruits and forever diet thinking - -I am able to veto my tummy's yearning for more calories.

Which led me to share with you my "cut the cost brunch"  to save $800 dollars per year by coming up with a "Breakfast in Bed Tactic"

Here's the gameplan to eliminate the craving for those  uncalled brunch run:

STEP 1: CREATE THE LOOK:

IF you don't like to eat in bed...sometimes, all you need is to jazz up the look of  your breakfast table ! Create a great setting by getting up early and setting an ambiance to your breakfast room! Light a candle, use your best linen, take out the tea set, set a centerpiece or as simple as placing a flower in a vase to induce you to dining in! If you are tired with traditional pancakes and toast  - -invest in a waffle maker  to make the familiar dough look different!

STEP 2: STOCK UP ON BASICS:

The temptation to go out may be avoided if you have a well stocked pantry and refrigerator. How many times have we complained .."but there's nothing to eat!" Yeah yeah - -you don't need deli food but just the basics! Always have the staples on hand (pancake mix, eggs)and it will go a long way. Also, purchase bacon/ham on your next visit to the grocery . Don't eat them at one sitting! Get a freezer bag and divide them into three separate bags . Keep them handy till you have the next craving to go out.

STEP 3: PRETEND TO BE THE ONE DAY DESSERT CHEF:

Drizzle your pancake with chocolate syrup like you are recreating a Picasso! Cook strawberry with honey/red wine sauce as topping to your french toast! Flare up some apple dipped in caramel butter sauce to go with your toast! Serve ice cream at 7 am! No rules..just look at your pantry and freezer and discover your inner creative soul! The art of making food look tempting and more pleasing to your eye will make you leave your car keys hidden in your bag in the morning.

STEP 4: COUNT YOUR CALORIES:

Check the website and dare to discourage yourself by looking at caloric content of those crazy pancakes sold at fast food chains! Not sure about you ...but this is always the show stopper for me!

HOW TO AVOID SPLURGING AT THE MALL

I was so wrapped up at work for 2 weeks (plus the cat waking us up at 3am) that I have intentionally avoided my home computer to avail of some quiet evenings. It's going to be a long Memorial weekend and I am planning for a girls' night out  with a visit to the mall at some point.

As always, I will drag my feet towards the mall  ...but with advance planning, this can be an opportunity to save money on items I will usually pay for regular price anyway! The trick: Basic research and  plan the mall route to what's on sale this week:

1. RESEARCH SALE ITEMS ONLINE :

Sephora (www.sephora.com)  has recently posted an ad in their website of up to  75% discount. I usually stick to my favorite brand (Clinique/Estee Lauder/Lancome/Mac) but with a good $6 deal, this is worth checking. So far, I found three items:

• Candle
• Tweezer
• Foundation

 

2. CHECK THE FREEBIES:

I usually schedule my cosmetic purchase where there are freebies. I have a drawer full of goodie bags that lasts me for months -- the good thing - -they are free! I am halfway through my foundation, so i think its time to refill. Frequently check Clinique, Lancome and Estee Lauder for seasonal gift packages (lipsticks, face care, bags, mascaras etc)

 

3. YOU'VE GOT TO LOVE THE CLEARANCE:

I never check price tag  when we were living in Manila. In my mind, If I am brave enough to enter a boutique - -then I should be ready to pay for a premium price. It doesn't apply here obviously!

Believe me or not - -but I got a black pants at Ann Taylor for a whopping $5 a week ago! Yes ! - The retail price is $89 - -but they got so tired of looking at that 0P item that they begged me to take the pants for 10,000++% discount maybe?

This is a new add released at their website(www.anntaylor.com) so I will be checking the store for another deal!

4. CHECK WHERE THE TEENS HANG OUT:

Our daughters are given monthly salaries (some people call them allowance?) and since it's not a 4-5 digit figure we receive monthly,  I need to give them credit for extending the life of their dollars as they usually find great deals. Recently, their favorite is Forever 21 (www.forever21.com) and they got cool suede bags ($10 , originally $60) and basic inner shirts ($2.50 versus $6 from other stores). For this mall run..I am going to check on this dress

 

5.  AVOID THE ROTONDA (FOOD COURT):

I am sorry, but I just hate to waste $6.99 for a lunch plate, plus $4 starbucks and maybe $3 pretzels when I have better food at home.  We changed our mindset that eating at the mall is an option and not an obligation. I am lucky that the girls have a healthy lifestyle - -So the  gazillion calories and chances of seating beside a coughing/sneezing psycho are motivating   enough for us to avoid the food court dining experience!

AND LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST - - PAY IN CASH! If you can...leave the plastic at home!

HOW TO SAVE MONEY: BE FASHION SMART AND STILL SAVE

In my 20s, I used to worry about not being able to wear the latest trend in clothes, shoes and bags. Somewhere, my silly subconscious mind tells me that my life is a runway and I was focused on getting the latest trend to the point that I panic and run to the mall on every opportunity I can grab and purchase items without looking at the tag! And because the clothes are trendy - -once the season changed, Goodwill people get boxes and boxes from my stash! It never occurred to me that one day I will be 60, that years from now, I may end up working at Walmart if I don’t change my lifestyle today …Yikes!

I am not a crazy mall rat at this point but if I purchase items I always ask myself two things: Is it at a discounted price? AND can I wear it for another 5 years? Gone are the days when I shop to satisfy my retail craving. Nowadays, I shop as part of investing a look that I can carry for years. No more weekend days that  I spend $100 just filling the carts and feeling like I still have nothing to wear! An expensive lesson I have learned. But it’s not too late --- as here’s my shop-less life lessons for the past three years and how I  still keep up with fashion (without getting broke)

INVEST ON CLASSIC DRESS UNDER A QUALITY BRAND:

 Like a true Audrey Hepburn fan, clean lines go a long way.  I have  black dresses from Ann Taylor/ Banana Republic/Bebe/Express that I have been using for almost 3 years now and each time I wear it, everybody thinks it is brand new. Last month, I did not resist this Ann Taylor Black Dress (Of course on sale at $59.50 vs original $149) as I know I can wear it forever! 

I stay focused on basic colors - black, brown and gray! For parties, I look for bright red and usually stick to a slim cut or tube dress

SUITS , SUITS AND SUITS:

You will never see me in trendy clothes at work. I avoid prints and flower patterns, instead tailored shirts and well cut suits support my timeless look. (Nobody knows that I haven’t shopped ..Yes!)

UPDATE BY SIMPLY ACCESSORIZING:

Sometime, if I crave for a petty indulgence, all I need is a bright color to change my mood. Do you believe that I got this yellow belt and scarf at $10 (original $49 each -coach.com). Occasionally, I will I throw a scarf around my neck and a generic $4 shirt will look like a high end brand

QUALITY AND NOT QUANTITY: I stopped buying color coordinated bags that costs $60-$200 a pop on weekends. Instead, I settled for a timeless brand for daily use.

BLACK STILETTOS GO A LONG WAY:We can never have too many shoes! I stopped counting, but if you found a good 3 inch pair - -grab it and it will last you for years. Also, I arranged my shoes where I can see them lined up in a row like soldiers. In this way, I don’t feel the urge to buy even more

CLASSY NOT CHUNKY: Costume jewelry is a good break from my basic pearls and old jewelry ensemble. However, break the “It’s only $10 habit”. Steer from purchasing chunky accessories that you wear once and everybody remembers it. Instead, go for the high end look on and make sure you display then in a corner where you can see them. 

STORAGE FRENZY:Buy $1 storage bins to categorize small items for easy access (headbands, lotions etc). This way, you know what treasures you hide under the makeup closet so you don’t have to buy items when you have some samples stash somewhere.

HOW I SAVED $40 ON ENTERTAINMENT

Frugality is defined as "the practice of acquiring goods and services in a restrained manner, and resourcefully using already owned economic goods and services, to achieve a longer term goal" .

Better late than never, I changed my spending habits two years ago to prepare myself for financial independence. For big spenders like me, one may feel depressed on the thought of being deprived on those small luxuries (weekend facials, movies, nails, latest bags etc) but after a while…I enjoy the bliss of laughing my way to the bank (or counting my virtual money).

It’s really about changing habits. Last night, I saved approx $40! The girls and I were supposed to go out for movies and dinner but we changed our plans and had great bonding time!

ORIGINAL PLAN:

• Dinner (Pei Wei) : $9 x 4 = $36
• Movies (Ghost of Girlfriends Past):               $6 x 4 = $24
• Total: $56

ALTERNATE PLAN:

• Purchased One bag of Orange for dinner: $ 4.50
• Purchased Movie at Target (Mama Mia): $10
• Total $14.50

Total Savings: $41.50

Knowing that in a month, this new chick flick will be released in video ....We'll just wait and buy you Matthew M!

HOW TO SAVE MONEY: READING ON A BUDGET

There will be no trips to Barnes and Nobles for a long time! G2 and I were driving along the highway when we came across a big sign "BOOKS ON SALE"! Following the trail like a hungry lion, we ended up at the back section of the local public library. I am not a fan of used books. I have this concept that books are investment so I never cheap out on a good book , but with my attempt of frugal living, if  I can find books for less than $10 ( my business books ranges from $25-35 a pop), then by all means!

Unfortunately, I cannot take pictures inside the ginormous place but it's like entering a town hall where  tables after tables of books laid down for voracious readers. Each table is neatly arranged by category, in alphabetical order and even sorted by authors.Wow! Lots of efforts from the volunteers!

Armed with 3 bags ...we were rummaging through the line like crazy! I got .."Who moved My Cheese", Art of War, Food recipes, lots of finance and marketing books and  even scored the latest "For one more day" by Mitch Albom at $2 and 2 volumes of Norton Masterpieces at $6 !

After an hour carrying the heaviest load I have ever carried for a long time - -I was hoping and praying that the $$ damage will not exceed $200! So, here comes the tally lady:

10++ hard bound books
20++ soft bound books (I lost track as the girls took their stash upstairs)
7 DVDs
1 cassette pack (French tapes)

Total Damage: $46.50. WOW! The books are in perfect condition and almost like new!

This is just the cost of 2 books for me! Again, no trips to Borders and Barnes for a looooonnnnggg time ...and - - I love that!. As I arrange the books in the TV room ....with books on a budget like this...I am definitely loving used books!

HOW TO SAVE MONEY: CLEANING CLUTTER CAN HELP CUT COST

Spring is here! Part of my saving tactic is recycling! Nope, not the recycling we know where we divide our trash in bins…but finding old possessions and make it appear new and fresh (at least in in our minds).

Each time I open our garage door, I am mentally trying to look for a box full of books that was buried when we moved in this house.  Last week alone, we found a box literally filled with more than 20 of my evening bags that I totally forgot about. At approximately $30 -$50/evening bag nowadays  (at sale price!) I know I am not going to the mall for a looooong time (or  I need to be attending more evening functions --yipee!)

 

 I am sure there are more buried gems somewhere in the rubble but with three teens whose always complaining of not having enough clothes and shoes to wear (uhhhmmm ….how many teens do you know that have walk-in closets?) 

So, I took a shot and attacked the pile of unwanted  shoes in the corner to see if I can still salvage them for their summer use before I head  to Salvation Army /Goodwill  this weekend...

Surely, not all these shoes are intended for donations? There must be a pair or something that they can still wear?

Times have changed! When I was in high school, I only have 2 pairs at a given time (the third one if I get lucky on my birthday)

And with the  wonders of detergent and heavy duty washing machine .....

VOILA!  18 pairs of shoes (out of 26 in the box)that can still be used for the summer... converted to $450 savings (@approx $25 each). AWESOME! Now...no one should complain they have no shoes to wear

PLAY MONEY: March- Week 4

I am adding a new category in this blog  - - which I am calling my Play Money Tracker. This is an itemized breakdown of all personal  expenses incurred for the week.  I do have a habit of losing my receipt but if I force myself to write it down religiously, I will help myself develop the habit of tracking up to the minute detail of my expenses. Also, easy for me to cross reference in my monthly/quarterly excel tracker.

Mar 25:

• Sears - $230.00 - Bought eyeglasses at Sears. I felt bad as I was hoping to get the 2 for $99 deal but apparently, it only applies to reading glasses. I need a new one to replace the broken pair I have been using for months

Mar 26:

• Walmart - $119.87 Nikon Cool pix : This is  my advance birthday gift for myself (My first digital cam). Since I am now in the blogging mode, I might as well get my own and seized borrowing from the girls

Mar 27: There's a lot of activity  here:

• Cleaners: $62.80 - I thought i would give myself a break from ironing as I am traveling next week and send 28 shirts today. My, I didn't realized we had that backlog. Oh well, laundry room is now back to normal

• Wine: $39.30 - I stocked up on our favorite Beringer Cab and White Zin . Also added an Australian Merlot

• Kroger: $ 7.00 - Honey pretzels and snacks for the girls
• Blockbuster: $5.46 - Love the 5 DVD rental for $5 promo for the girls
• Videobox: $2 new release movies for $ 1 rental each ..Cant beat that!
